She owns a production company by the name "Flower Films". Barrymore made her screen début in Altered States in 1980. She rose to fame by the role of Gertie in "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial".She was nominated in the best supporting actress category for her role in "Irreconcilable differences" ,in Golden Globe awards ceremony in 1984.
